Were you not issued a long-term visa in the last 12 months from Iceland?

Are you going to work remotely in Iceland for a foreign company or a self-employed worker? Are you permanently employed there?

Do you intend to go out of Iceland after your stay expires?

Is your monthly income at least ISK 1,000,000? Or, if you have dependents or a partner, do you earn an income least to ISK 1,300,000?

Do you have health insurance for your stay?

For your dependents or family members, are they exempt from a visa? If you have children, are they also younger than 18?

Documents Required for Your Application

1. Application Formform L-802

2. Payment Receipt – with the name of Applicant and Date of Birth (DD.MM.YYYY) on the subject line. The application fee must be paid before sending your application.

3. Passport Copy – this must be valid at least 3 months beyond stay. Submit:

  • Information Page

  • With Applicant’s Signature

  • All Visas

  • All stamps showing travels to or from the Schengen area for the last 12 months

4. Passport Photo – 35x45mm, taken within the last 6 months

5. Health Insurance

6. Purpose of Stay

  • For Employed – confirmation from Employer that applicant can do work remotely

  • Self-Employed – confirmation that applicant is verifiably self-employed in home country or residence

7. Proof of Income – at least ISK 1,000,000 monthly or ISK 1,300,000 monthly if with family. Examples are Employment Contact with monthly salary, Contracts with agreed payments, etc.

8. Criminal Record Check – may be requested by the Directorate of Immigration

Additional Requirement for spouse or partner

  • Requirements 1-5 above and

  • Marriage Certificate or Documents confirming that cohabitation has lasted at least a year. Additional Requirement for spouse or partner

Additional Requirement for children

  • Requirements 1-5 above

  • Birth Certificate or Custody Documents (Custody Documents, Divorce Papers, Death Certificate)

  • Documents regarding child's education if the child(ren) is 6 to 16 – must confirm that either

    • The child receives remote instruction from a school in his/her home country

    • Enrolled in a school in Iceland

    • Child receives homeschooling

Steps on applying for an Iceland Digital Nomad Visa

STEP 1: Pay the visa fee. Don’t forget to place your name and date of birth on the payment’s subject line. Details are:

STEP 2: Gather the rest of the documents and place them in an envelope.

STEP 3: Send the envelope to the address below:

You can also place it on dropbox at that address.

STEP 4: The Immigration authorities will contact you if you need more documents or if your visa is approved. In case it’s approved, go to Iceland.

STEP 5: Upon arrival, contact utl@utl.is so that they will issue you a visa.

  • The validity of stay will depend on the following

  • If the applicant applies in their country and is not yet in Iceland upon decision, it can be up to 180 days

  • If they apply in their country but enter the Schengen area before the decision, validity will be 180 days minus the days of stay in the Schengen Area

  • For those who applied within the Schengen area, then it can be valid up to 90 days

  • You are allowed to stay in other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in a 180 day period
