Guide on Getting an Estonia Digital Nomad Visa for Remote Workers

In today’s generation, working remotely is being very popular. Teams or businesses don’t need to have physical offices, especially those who are promoting services. As there are many digital nomads, some countries began to adapt. Estonia just launched a Digital Nomad Visa for remote workers. Here’s a guide on getting an Estonia Digital Nomad Visa.

As digital nomads don’t apply for a work visa in most countries; instead, they have regular tourist or short term visas. A few countries like Estonia has a program that lets location-independent workers live in their country and legally work there. Qualifications to be Eligible for an Estonia Digital Nomad Visa

Are you able to work independent of location? Can you work wherever?

Can you perform your work duties remotely using the internet or technology?

Do you (at least one)

  • Have an active employment contract with a registered company outside of Estonia?

  • Conduct business through your company registered abroad?

  • Or a freelance worker for clients outside of the country?

Do you earn about EURO 3,504 monthly income gross of tax? Can you provide proof that you met it six months before your application?

If you answered YES, then you are eligible to apply for an Estonia Digital Nomad Visa! You can read more below!

Documents Required for an Application

1. Visa Application Form – you can choose either Type C or Type D; the link provided is where you can fill it up online, then, you will be able to print it through an e-mailed PDF; please don’t forget to sign it

2. Documents certifying that applicant can work remotely (independent of location) and use telecommunications technology to perform work duties – e.g., a written explanation that applicant will work remotely or a certificate from an employer that applicant can work remotely

3. Certification that you work:

  • For a foreign registered company

  • For a foreign registered company that you have shares or own

  • As a freelancer or consultant to foreign establishments

Examples may be employment contracts, contracts with clients, business registration documents, tax returns, etc.

4. Proof of income from the last 6 months – e.g. bank statements, payslips, contract – you will need to earn at least EURO 3,504 per month

5. Description of your study and professional life course

6. Valid Passport – with 2 blank pages and it must still be valid 3 months after visa expires

7. Photo – 35x45 mm

8. Insurance Policy – must be valid during your stay in Schengen Countries. We highly recommend AXA Schengen.

 You may also be asked additional documents like:

  • Proof of purpose of the journey

  • Accommodation or Proof of Means

  • Intention to leave the Schengen Area after visa expiration

Steps on applying for a Digital Nomad Visa

STEP 1: Contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate and ask for Estonia Digital Nomad Visa's information.

  • What are the complete documents required or checklist?

  • Where should the documents be submitted?

  • How to pay the fee?

  • How to make an appointment?

STEP 2: Gather the requirements. Pay the fee in advance, if required. If you are ready, you can book an appointment at the nearest Embassy or Visa Application Center.

STEP 3: Go to the Embassy or Visa Application center with your documents and payment slip. Biometrics will be taken.

STEP 4: Wait for the decision of the Embassy if your application passed. It will take at least 15 to 30 days.

STEP 5: You can pick up your Digital Nomad Visa, congratulations!

  • You can work for an Estonian Company or Employer as long as the trip's main purpose must be work specified in their application. For example, if the applicant is an IT specialist who works for a foreign employer may do additional work with an Estonian Company as a specialist.

  • Applicants staying in Estonia for more than 183 days within 12 months are considered as tax residents. They should declare and pay taxes.

  • A person can stay for the entire period of your DNV’s validity in Estonia. They are also allowed to go in and out of the country.

  • DNV holders can go to the Schengen Zone depending on the entry of the visa and the validity.

  • Holders must have health insurance in case of illness or injury.

  • Applicants can bring family members.

  • You can’t renew your Estonia Digital Nomad Visa, but you can apply for another one. However, foreigners can stay in 548 days within 730 consecutive days.
