Overview of Mauritius

Capital: Port Louis

Language: English and French

Currency: Mauritian Rupee (1 USD = 28 MUR)

The Republic of Mauritius is a tiny island nation in the Indian Ocean. If you don’t know where it is, it’s on the east of Madagascar near Réunion, a French Territory. It’s more than 2 thousand square kilometers. Mauritius was a British Indian Territory until it gained its independence in 1968.

Even though this is an island nation with tropical beaches and white sand, they have 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites: a Building Complex built in the 1800s and a cultural landscape. They also have a National Park. Mauritius is rich in culture and history as they are blended with English, Indian, Muslim, and Christan traditions.

Going to Mauritius

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is the primary airport in Mauritius. They have flights to Europe (France, Germany, UK), Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, India, UAE) and Africa (Kenya, South Africa), to name a few.

If you are from the Philippines, you can ride a plane and stop by Malaysia, Singapore, or Hong Kong before arriving in Mauritius.

What to do in Mauritius

1. Scuba Diving in the North of Mauritius

See marine life as you go Scuba Diving under the sea in Mauritius. Discover colorful reefs, wrecks, fishes, and, hopefully, friendly dolphins. I got to dive with Dive Dream Divers in Mauritius; it was fun, and they were very professional.

2. Hike Le Morne Brabant

Le Morne Brabant isn’t just a mountain or a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its beauty. But, because of the history behind it. This landscape was used as a hiding place for escaped slaves when they were fighting for their freedom. Hike in the trails as you will not only see picturesque views but also learn history.

3. Have a Cycling Tour in the South

Visit famous beaches, sugarcane plantations, small villages, and old houses as you cycle on the South of Mauritius. I had it with the owner of Electro-Bike Discovery and two other guests. It wasn’t that tiring as it’s an electric bike. It was a fantastic experience!

4. Learn more about History in Aapravasi Ghat

In the Capital of Mauritius is a world heritage site or Aapravasi Ghat (in Hindi or Immigration Depot.) It’s now a museum that’s free. There are guided tours in which can help you grasp more on the history of Mauritius: from how hard it was to the immigrants to how strong it is today.

5. Ride the Waves in the West of Mauritius

Head to the world-known “The Legend of One Eye” in Le Morne and catch some waves. Duet to the steady winds, it’s great for not only surfing but kite surfing as well. Try learning a new skill while you are in another country!
