Overview of Dominica
Capital: Roseau
Language: English
Currency: East Caribbean Dollar (1 USD = 2.70 XCD)
The Commonwealth of Dominica is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. This island was settled by South Americans, then by the French and then Great Britain. However, Dominica gained its independence in 1978. With full of natural wonders like being formed from volcanic activity, Dominica is home to various and rare flora and fauna.
The population in Dominica is only a few due to many people who decided to leave and stay in other countries. However, there’s probably great health food here as there are many people who have reached more than a100 years old on the island. There are many Roman Catholics in Dominica as well as people of other religions. With diverse cultures and people, this country will be an interesting adventure.
Going to Dominica
You can go by plane or sea ferry from neighboring islands like St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Antigua, and Barbuda or Puerto Rico. There are no flights from the US or Europe as the airport is tiny. You can, however, fly to those mentioned countries.
What to do in Dominica
1. See the Boiling Lake
The second biggest hot lake in the earth next to Frying Pan in New Zealand is the Boiling Lake. Just be ready to trail a challenging hike to the top. It’s not recommended to swim there because that’s dangerous and you could be burned alive. But don’t worry, there’s a river down that has bearable temperatures.
2. Learn at Kalinago Barana Aute
Learn the culture and history of the Kalinago tribe through your tour in Kalinago Barana Aute. You could see that huts they once lived at as well as items they have created. The views are spectacular, too!
3. Enjoy Trafalgar Falls
You will not only fall in love with the falls but its surroundings as well. Choose between hot water or a cold water pool (yes, there are two kinds!) It’s also very accessible and way easier than other sites like the Boiling Lake. Get rewarded with an awesome view as you climb to the top.
4. Explore the Dominica Botanical Gardens
As I’ve typed at the top, Dominica has a various and rare flora and fauna; see gorgeous trees and endemic lizards as you explore this beautiful greenery. It’s a great place to relax or take a hike or jog. If you are lucky, you could see a cricket match or a festival on the grounds.
5. Have fun at Cabrits National Park
Take a hike or see the port but don’t forget to snorkel to see the marine life of Dominica. Be in awe of the marine life (reefs and fishes); there breathtaking! But don’t forget to breathe when you snorkel (haha). You won’t regret going under the sea!
6. Swim at a beach in Dominica
A Caribbean adventure isn’t complete without having to dip yourself in the Caribbean Sea or the Atlantic Ocean. Dominica has many gorgeous beaches; white sand, black sand, rocky or smooth. The views are worthwhile. P.S. the Batibou Beach is where the Pirates of the Caribbean movie was filmed, might as well go and feel like Jack Sparrow.
