Overview of Mauritania

Capital: Nouakchott
Language: Arabic, French
Currency: Mauritanian ouguiya (1USD = 37.5 MRO)

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country found in West Africa in the Atlantic Ocean and should be not interchangeable with Mauritius, another African country near Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Berbers and Africans were tribes in Mauritania, however, this country became a territory of France until 1960. Though a lot of internal-political conflicts took place, Mauritania rose to what it is today.

Most of Mauritania is desert, so desert excursions are a must-do, however, there are also rainforests and beaches. There are also old towns from the 11th century that have been preserved that show the nomadic life of the people. But being nomads, people with no regular homes, are still practiced today. It’s an interesting culture to learn from and witness.

Going to Mauritania

Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport has flights mostly from African countries. If in Europe, you can get a direct flight from France or Asia, there’s from Turkey.

Philippine passport holders can get stop by Turkey before arriving in Mauritania.

What to do in Mauritania

1. Have an Adventure at the Sahara Desert

Arabian Night and Arabian Day. That phrase/tune in Aladdin reminds me every time I suggest an adventure in a desert. Like the scene, go on a camel ride to this vast land full of sand and dunes. However, there isn't only sand but there are trees and oasis in your journey. Try also the path where the people took centuries ago and learn the history of their culture.

2. Visit the ancient towns

A Berber fortified village is a must-see when you enter Mauritania. The ancient Ksour of Ouadane, Chinguetti, Tichitt, and Oualata are considered UNESCO World Heritage sites. You will appreciate not only the history behind the buildings but also the architecture. It’s amazing!

3. See the Richat Structure

“The Eye of Sahara” is found near Ouadane in Mauritania. It’s a very big dome on the sand that's about 40 kilometers in diameter. It’s also very colorful - brown, yellow, green, blue, and black. A lot claim that this is the “Lost City of Atlantis,” mysterious right? You should go and see!

4. See birds at Banc d’Arguin National Park

Banc d’Arguin National Park is another UNESCO World Heritage site in Mauritania. It's peaceful and near the beach. It’s a great place to be with nature and appreciates it. Many migratory birds stop by here (about a million or two), so come and bird watching!

5. Hang out at Port de Peche

Appreciate the culture of the Mauritians and watch them board their colorful boats and come back with fresh catch. The best time to go is on sunsets as you will see many fishermen docking. The market is also a fun place to be; full of locals thriving! Do try grilled fish there or buy fresh ones!

6. Stay at an Oasis

When we hear about Oasis, we feel like it’s an illusion in the desert. But in Sahara, it’s not a figment of your imagination but really is true! Stay at an oasis (in a tent for a much authentic feel.) There are trees and a spot where you can swim. It’s definitely an experience worth telling.
