Overview of Fiji
Capital: Suva
Language: English and Fijian
Fiji is an archipelagic country in the South Pacific. It’s a paradise filled with 333 islands, two-thirds are uninhabited. This sunny nation has temperatures from 19-33 degrees. If you don’t like too much heat, I suggest going to Fiji from December to April.
There are two big islands in Fiji; Viti Levu (Great Fiji) and Vanua Levu (Great Land). Viti, the bigger island, is the location of the capital Suva, as well as the main international airport in Fiji. You can get from one to the other by either a plane or a ferry.
Fiji food is healthy and mostly based on tuber or coconuts. Some dishes are somewhat similar to the Philippines as they are also a tropical island country. Even the street food looks and tastes healthy as they are fruits and seafood (P.S. writing this is making me hungry.)
Fijians are very friendly and Fiji is actually one of the top happiest countries in the world. They are very willing to share their cultures with tourists. So, I dare you to befriend at least one Fijian!
Going to Fiji
If you are from the Philippines, there are one-stop flights to Fiji. You can stop by Singapore or Hong Kong if you don’t want to process additional visas. But there are also flights from Australia, New Zealand, or the US. The most popular airline is Fiji Airways.
What to do in Fiji?
1. Dive at Great Astrolabe Reef
The Great Astrolabe Reef is one of the biggest barrier reefs in the earth and known for its Soft Corals and diverse marine life. It’s also where many types of fishes breed as it is far to reach. You can snorkel or scuba dive and see manta rays, tuna, marlin, and many more fishes. Fiji is one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world.
2. Walkthrough the Garden of the Sleeping Giant
Named after the mountain under which it sits, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant has over 2,000 varieties of Asian orchids and Cattleya hybrids. Their website calls it “one of the best kept horticultural secrets in the whole of the South Pacific!” The garden also allows you to explore the Fijian jungle and witness many other lush tropical plants that are native to the island. It’s only 20 min out of Nadi, making it convenient to get to.
3. See Fiji from above
Ever saw those movies that people ride a chartered plane and go off an adventure? Well, you could go too! Flying over Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands would be incredible. The dazzling waters and picturesque islands - that would be a feast for the eyes! A 10-minute ride can cost up to USD 100. Pricey, but definitely, worth it!
4. Visit a Fijian village
One of the best experiences when visiting another country is experiencing their culture and talking to locals. Visit a Fijian village and you might not only see them afar, but you could also befriend one! They also make you drink Kava, a traditional Fijian drink.
5. Have a mini-getaway in an Island!
Yasawa Islands, Manta Ray Island or Mamanuca Islands - book a hotel and enjoy 24/7 sea and sand. Relax and unwind in these picturesque parts of Fiji. There are unlimited crystal-blue waters, marine life to see when snorkeling, and white sand. It’s a paradise on earth!
6. Catch the Sun
Be it on the island you are staying, Nadi or Suva, or the Sun Coast. Catch the gorgeous view of the sunrise or sunset Fiji offers. It’s definitely a great way to start or end your day. Enjoy this with a local drink and a happy smile = perfection!
